In somebody else's sky, but why, why, why I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all that I'll be, yeah Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my headĪnd now my bitter hands cradle broken glassĪll the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everythingĪll the love gone bad turned my world to black I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turnĪnd now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds Were laid spread out before me as her body once didĪll five horizons revolved around her soul Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay In the end, even though the main character is forever devastated for his loss, he wishes the other person luck and to be special and unique in someone's life, but yet he mourns why can't he be the one who can make her happy. This mark is said to be permanent, since it is everywhere, at the time the protagonist sings and forever. All the evidences of the existence of their love was "tattooed" in black after everything went bad and his world descent into darkness. The unhappiness is also stated when not even the most beautiful and positive background can touch the protagonist's heart and make him blissful, because he feels pain holding the remains of the relationship. Now, the person feels alone and standing before the past and sees that everything has gone dark.

The protagonist states that the relationship was worthy, since both could learn from each other but unfortunately it had an end. The song deals with the main character singing about someone loved in the past and remembering moments of happiness. When they broke up, Vedder was pretty sad, and after that he moved to Chicago and his life started to change, specially in what deals with his family. It is also speculated that the woman whose song is based is Liz Gumble, Eddie's girlfriend on Junior Year, someone he had a deep and romantic relationship. Vedder stated on Pearl Jam Twenty that "it's a true story, something that I really felt and I still feel every time I sing it". The new song, now called "Black" was a romantic, depressive, emotional and past love story. Eddie didn't send any composition to the trio about this specific Stone's demo, but on his way to Seattle, he wrote the lyrics. When Vedder received a tape with demos from Stone, Jeff and Mike, he recorded three songs and composed a trilogy ( The Momma-Son) but only sent it in another tape. There was another song, recorded by Gossard, named E Ballad. Luis Fonsi feat.Liz Gumble, the possible inspiration for "Black". I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine? Ooh and twisted thoughts that spin round my head I'm spinning, oh I'm spinning How quick the sun can drop awayĪnd now my bitter hands cradle broken glass Of what was everything Oh the pictures have all been washed in black Tattooed everythingĪll the love gone bad, turned my world to black Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be, yeah

I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play I can feel their laughter, so why do I see her? Ooh and all I taught her was everything Ooh I know she gave me all that she woreĪnd now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds Of what was everything Oh the pictures have all been washed in black Tattooed everything Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay Were laid spread out before me as her body once did All five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn
